Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
