As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
